19th Century Horse and Dog Oil on Canvas - Signed
Signed by artist Alfred John Wheeler (AJW)
About the artist:
John Wheeler was self-taught, based first in Bath and later in London. He had a number of distinguished patrons from the hunting community, including the Dukes of Beaufort, Portland, Westminster, Rutland and Hamilton, the Earls of Roseberry and Caithness and Baron Rothschild as well as many other titled gentry.
His interest in art was not thought to have been encouraged, and at the age of nineteen he enlisted as a private in the 2nd Queens Corps which gave him plenty of experience and a knowledge of horses which was to be very useful in his artistic career.
John Arnold Wheeler’s chosen subject matter was horses and dogs. His specialty was horse racing scenes and equestrian portraits. He was born in Gloucestershire and was the son of John Wheeler, a stone cutter, and father of James Thomas Wheeler and Alfred Wheeler .
